Just because I want to put on a little neon pink lipstick before heading out the door each day or using a cover stick to cover up a scar I got from being on life support shouldn’t mean I’m taking a risk with my health. Unfortunately, in the United States, that’s exactly what’s happening, not to a few women, but to more than 170 million women who use beauty and personal care products every single day, often without knowing what’s inside them according to Lisa Goshon, clean beauty advocate, innovator and scientist.
Most consumers assume that if a product is on the shelf, it must be safe. Nothing could be further from the truth. The U.S. has some of the weakest cosmetic regulations in the world. Thousands of chemicals (many linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and reproductive harm) are still legally allowed in makeup, skincare, hair products, and fragrances. Ingredients banned in Europe and other countries are sold here every day, and women are the ones paying the price with their health.
Beauty should never be a gamble. It should be safe, empowering, and free of hidden toxins. That’s why we need stronger legislation, more transparency, and innovation in the industry. Women shouldn’t have to choose between feeling beautiful and staying healthy.
Because at the end of the day, beauty should give us life, not take it away which is why I'm on a mission to bring forward legislation banning the most toxic chemicals found in beauty products. With the help of AI and states like California, New York and Vermont passing legislation, hopefully one day we'll have federal laws to keep women safe!
